Calocedrus decurrens· Hand-Distilled Hydrosol

Distilled Summer 2026

There is something deeply grounding about the scent of the Western forests: warm wood, aromatic foliage, and the rich, resinous smell of trees that have stood through generations of seasons.

Incense cedar is a beautiful native tree of the American West, known for its fragrant wood and scale-like evergreen foliage. Its aroma is warm, dry, woody, and gently balsamic, with a quality that feels both ancient and welcoming.

Made from freshly harvested foliage and carefully distilled in my copper alembic, this hydrosol captures a softer, greener expression of the tree than its wood alone might suggest. It evokes the feeling of stepping into a forest sanctuary, inviting us to slow down, settle into our bodies, and reconnect with the steady presence of the more-than-human world.

Cedar has a long history of cultural and ceremonial significance among diverse peoples, although traditions and uses vary considerably by community and species. Here, I work with incense cedar as a botanical ally for grounding, contemplation, and creating spaces that feel rooted and intentional.

Its fragrance lends itself beautifully to ritual, meditation, and everyday moments when we want to bring the atmosphere of the forest into our homes.
